Back in 2001, Pizza Hut became the first restaurant chain to deliver to space, reports BBC<\/em><\/a>. The pizza was sent the International Space Station (ISS) onboard a resupply rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the delivery was an obvious publicity stunt by Pizza Hut, one that cost them over one million dollars, it still required a ton of special planning to pull off. For example, according to ABC<\/em><\/a>, \u201cthe pizza was seasoned with extra spices, especially salt, since it\u2019s known that taste buds become a little dulled in space. And although pepperoni is the chain\u2019s most popular topping, the company settled for salami since pepperoni did not preserve well during the required 60-day test: it grew mold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the pizza arrived to the ISS, Usachov was videotaped<\/a> happily munching on a slice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the Russians getting paid to have pizza delivered to them, the U.S. crew was forbidden from eating any of it because NASA has a policy against advertisements on their spacecrafts, according to ABC<\/em><\/a>. There are no reports indicating that the Russians ate their pizza mockingly in front of the U.S. crew, which we can only imagine they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
